Real Salt Lake ended up on the wrong end of a penalty-kick tiebreaker on Saturday night, falling to Mexican club Atlético de San Luis in a Leagues Cup game in Sandy.

After the teams played to a 2-2 tie in regulation, San Luis prevailed 4-1 in PKs.

The loss in the Phase One portion of the tournament came after RSL beat Club América in a shootout on Wednesday night.

RSL took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of Saturday night’s game when Braian Ojeda scored off a corner kick from Pablo Ruiz.

In the 24th minute, San Luis tied the game when João Pedro scored with a header off a pass from Jose Suarez.

San Luis took the lead when Miguel Garcia scored in the 82nd minute.

In the 88th minute, Ojeda scored his second goal of the game, tying the score at 2-2.

In the shootout, RSL’s Brayan Vera and Justen Glad failed in their attempts, while Johnny Russell made his. San Luis made all four of its attempts to notch the win.

RSL dominated time of possession (62.5% to 37.5%) but San Luis had a 15-14 edge in shots, including a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.

RSL will welcome Queretaro to Sandy on Wednesday, Aug. 6, to conclude its trio of Phase One matches.

Eighteen MLS teams and 18 Liga MX teams are competing in the Leagues Cup, with the top four from each league advancing to the quarterfinals. RSL is now an extreme long shot to reach the knockout phase, needing a win over Queretaro and help from other results.
