Real Monarchs earn first playoff win in club history, advance to USL semifinals with 6-2 victory over Orange County

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Real Monarchs midfielder Maikel Chang, shown during a match in April, scored a goal in the Monarchs' 6-2 playoff win over Orange County on Saturday.

The Real Monarchs picked a heck of a time to score their most goals in the 2019 season.

The Monarchs beat Orange County SC 6-2 Saturday afternoon and advanced to the semifinal final round of the United Soccer League playoffs. It was the club’s first-ever playoff victory.

“I am so proud of this team," interim coach Jamison Olave said. "I said to them, that this is the first time ever that we’ve won in the first round of the playoffs, and that was thanks to them. They left it all on the field. The way they played and the way they embraced the game, that’s why we got the result tonight.”

The Monarchs will play the winner of the game between the Phoenix Rising and the Austin Bold, which was to occur later in the evening. If Austin wins, the Monarchs will host the game.

Jack Blake scored twice for the Monarchs, while Maikel Chang, Douglas Martinez, Tate Schmitt and Erik Holt each provided one goal. Martinez, Schmitt and Holt also play for Real Salt Lake.

Orange County played the final 40 minutes of the match a man down because a player received his second yellow card and was ejected.
