Real Monarchs part ways with assistant coach, add injured RSL player to staff

The Real Monarchs have “mutually agreed to part ways” with assistant coach Danny Cruz, the team announced Thursday.

Jason Mims, who is part of the Real Salt Lake Academy coaching staff, will take over for Cruz effective immediately, according to a team release.

Cruz took a job as an assistant coach with Louisville City FC, a team spokesperson told The Salt Lake Tribune. Louisville’s coach, John Hackworth, coached Cruz when he was a member of the Philadelphia Union from 2012-2014.

In another coaching development announced Thursday, RSL defender David Horst is set to join the Monarchs coaching staff under interim head coach Jamison Olave for the remainder of the 2018 season. Horst suffered an Achilles injury in June that ended his season with RSL.

Cruz played eight matches for the Monarchs in 2017, and was part of the team that won the United Soccer League Championship that season. He was elevated to an assistant coaching role before the 2018 season.
