High school football power rankings: Corner Canyon remains on top, three teams out

West, San Juan and Grantsville have been playing well enough to get them into the rankings this week.

The Corner Canyon Chargers are now one win away from tying Duchesne’s all-time state record in consecutive wins. So it’s no surprise that they keep the top spot in the rankings.

Meanwhile, some long winning streaks got three teams in the rankings this week. Orem, Layton and Olympus are left off this week to account for the newcomers.

Here are The Salt Lake Tribune’s prep football Top 25 power rankings for Week 7.

1. Corner Canyon (7-0)

Previous week: 1

The Chargers scored 21 straight points against Skyridge — which has arguably the state’s best defense — behind quarterback Devin Brown’s four touchdown passes. The #StreakWatch is now at 47.

2. Skyridge (6-1)

Previous week: 2

The Falcons put up a fight against Corner Canyon, even having the opportunity to go up 10 points early. But they just didn’t have enough offense despite junior quarterback McCae Hillstead’s two touchdown passes and 60 rushing yards.

3. Mountain Ridge (6-1)

Previous week: 4

The Sentinels finally dropped a game, and it was to a Bingham team still trying to find itself among 6A’s elite.

4. West Jordan (6-0)

Previous week: 5

The Jaguars stayed undefeated by beating Herriman, which has a losing record. Senior quarterback Boston Farmer recorded a passing and rushing TD.

5. Lone Peak (4-1)

Previous week: 14

Luke Durfey came up clutch for the Knights in a comeback win over American Fork. Lone Peak has won two straight, both in its region.

6. Ridgeline (7-0)

Previous week: 6

Riverhawks senior quarterback Kaden Cox threw for six touchdowns in a blowout win over Mountain Crest.

7. American Fork (4-2)

Previous week: 3

The Cavemen didn’t score in the second and third quarters against Lone Peak, and suffered their second straight loss.

8. Beaver (7-0)

Previous week: 7

The Beavers would’ve shut out Grand County had it not been for a late touchdown after the game had long been decided.

9. South Summit (7-0)

Previous week: 8

The Wildcats narrowly escaped an overtime loss by grabbing a two-point conversation to beat Summit Academy, 43-42.

10. Provo (6-1)

Previous week: 9

The Bulldogs prevailed in a hard-fought game against Spanish Fork.

11. Tooele (6-1)

Previous week: 10

The Buffaloes were led by Mapa Vaenuku and his three rushing touchdowns in their blowout of Mountain View.

12. Springville (6-1)

Previous week: 11

The Red Devils exploded for 23 points in the fourth quarter against Wasatch to come away with their second straight win.

13. Timpanogos (6-1)

Previous week: 12

The Timberwolves got back to their winning ways with a resounding victory over Uintah.

14. Pine View (5-1)

Previous week: 15

The Panthers had a bye week.

15. West (5-1)

Previous week: Unranked

The Panthers have won four straight games, all in region play. But their only quality win has come against Roy.

16. San Juan (6-1)

Previous week: Unranked

The Broncos are winners of six straight in a classification that includes two undefeated teams. Senior quarterback Jace Palmer threw for five touchdowns against Millard.

17. Duchesne (6-1)

Previous week: 17

The Eagles blew out Rich for their third straight win. Sophomore QB Parker Crum shined again, throwing three touchdowns and running one in.

18. Northridge (6-1)

Previous week: 18

The Knights extended their winning streak to five games behind quarterback Maximus Fonoti-maikui and his four touchdown passes and one rushing TD.

19. Syracuse (5-2)

Previous week: 19

The Titans shut out Clearfield and sophomore QB Jake Hopkins provided both touchdowns.

20. Timpview (5-2)

Previous week: 21

The Thunderbirds beat the Highland Rams by 40 points, scoring 28 points in the first quarter alone.

21. Brighton (5-2)

Previous week: 23

Utah Utes prospect Lander Barton recorded 16 tackles and a sack as the Bengals beat East in a Thursday matchup.

22. Stansbury (5-2)

Previous week: 25

The Stallions didn’t allow a point in the first and fourth quarters en route to their fourth straight win.

23. Wasatch (5-2)

Previous week: 13

The Wasps dropped their first region game of the season and had their three-game overall streak snapped.

24. Logan (5-2)

Previous week: 16

The Grizzlies lost to Sky View after scoring just one touchdown — and that was in the second quarter — and giving up 42 points.

25. Grantsville (5-2)

Previous week: Unranked

After the 3A team lost its first two games of the season, it has ripped off five straight wins.
