Six high school football games canceled this week due to coronavirus

Six high school football games have been canceled this week due to exposure to COVID-19.

Orem High, the defending 5A champions, is looking for a game for the third week in a row after Friday’s matchup against Mountain Ridge was canceled.

“Looking for a game again this week,” Tigers offensive coordinator Lance Reynolds wrote on Twitter. “@OremTigerFball struggling to find a team to play.”

Orem hasn’t played a game since Sept. 11. Alpine District spokesperson David Stephenson said the reason for that is Orem’s opponents haven’t been able to play due to COVID-19.

Highland and Murray were scheduled to play Thursday. But the Spartans have to quarantine until Oct. 19 because the number of cases reached three among the team. That would also affect their game against Box Elder, which is scheduled for Oct. 14.

The other Thursday game canceled, the one between Mountain View and Cedar Valley, Stevenson said, was because of “COVID-19 related issues.”

Duchesne and Rich won’t pay their game scheduled for Friday because nine of Rich’s varsity players had to quarantine due to possible exposure to the coronavirus, Rich District spokesperson Dale Lamborn told The Salt Lake Tribune. Rich floated the option of a subvarsity game, but both teams decided against that.

Lamborn said none of Rich High’s athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 in any sport. In addition to the football players, three volleyball players have been quarantined due to possible exposure.

Weber’s game Friday against Roy was canceled earlier this week after a third person associated with the Roy football team tested positive, Weber District spokesperson Lane Findlay said in a statement. It was the third positive test within a two-week period.

“As a precaution, and at the direction of the Weber-Morgan Health Department, the coaching staff and all players on the Roy High School football team will be quarantined,” Findlay said. “This affects about 13 coaches and 81 players, who were notified [Monday] of the quarantine requirements.”

West Jordan and Granger were also scheduled to play Friday. Granite District spokesperson Ben Horsely said three members of the Granger team tested positive for the coronavirus. No other games have been impacted, he said.

West Jordan, however, was able to find a game. The Jaguars will play Olympus on Friday, Jordan District spokesperson Sandra Riesgraf said. It’ll be a make-up game between the two teams after they had to postpone a game two weeks ago.
