The freshman pulled off the improbable in the state quarterfinal round, scoring three points in the final minute to upset top-seeded Bear River’s Zackery Bingham in the 106-pound division. “Bingham’s crazy. In my mind, he’s a legend,” Lopez said. “It’s crazy that I beat him. I still can’t believe it.”

Randon Deets, Uintah

The rematch of Deets’ victory against Desert Hills’ Ryker Boyce was closer than the initial match, but the outcome remained the same. Boyce, last year’s Class 3A state champion at 106, found little scoring opportunities in a 5-2 quarterfinal loss at 126 pounds.

Trevor Barrus, Sky View

The senior recorded two pins to reach the 195 state semifinals. His reward is a showdown with top-seeded Byron Anderson of Desert Hills, who has four losses all season and pinned two opponents Friday in less than two minutes total.

The senior pulled off the biggest upset on Day 1 with a 14-7 decision against No. 1 seed Hayden Harris of Green Canyon at 182. Mallory was 7 seconds from an unbeaten day but was upended late in the quarterfinals.

Total time on the mat for Desert Hills’ Byron Anderson, the top seed at 195. The senior pinned both opponents to improve to 41-4 this season.
