Class 4A state swimming: Day 1 standout performers and key numbers

Returning to an event she says is one of her favorites, the Miners junior standout cruised to more than a 3-second victory in the 200-yard individual medley on Day 1. She swam the 200 and 500 freestyles and won both at last year’s state meet. Beller, who took second in the event as a freshman, finished in 2 minutes, 9.16 seconds to beat the 2:12.93 by Orem’s Addison Richards.

After finishing fourth in the 100 freestyle last year, he went shorter and quicker this year. Runner-up Dennis Djunic of Park City bettered his own mark from last year when he was second in Class 3A, but Black denied the move to No. 1 by touching in 21.54 to beat Djunic’s 21.77.

The freshman announced her entry to the powerhouse Miners girls’ team by easily winning the 200 freestyle. Her time of 1:53.76 bested Megan Brimhall of Sky View, the second-place finisher in Class 5A last year, who touched in 1:57.28. Djunic also set the Park City girls in motion by leading off the 200 medley relay that set a Class 4A record. The Miners finished in 1:49.05 to beat the 1:49.18 record time by Timpview in 2009.

The number of total career state victories for Park City’s Katie Hale after she won the 50 freestyle and was on the Miners’ first-place team in the 200 medley relay. Hale’s total is comprised of seven championships relays and three solo titles. She’ll go for her fourth individual title when she swims the 100 butterfly Saturday.

The number of seconds separating the top three relay teams in the boys’ 200 medley relay. Desert Hills anchor Trevor Larson touched at 1:40.26 for the victorious Thunder to nip J.R. Gustat of Juan Diego and Maxwell Holdsworth of Lehi at the wall.

The number of second-place finishes for Orem on Day 1. The Tigers, seeking their first race crown since 2011, got a runner-up result from sophomore Addison Richards in the girls’ 200 individual medley and saw junior Leah Gale take second in the girls’ 50 freestyle two races later.
