Class 6A state swimming: Day 1 standout performers and key numbers

Sophomore Jordan Tiffany took first in the 200-yard individual medley as he powered to a victory margin of more than 4 seconds. The second-place finisher was older brother Braden Tiffany, a senior for the Knights who did not participate in the individual medley at state a year ago. Victorious Jordan finished fifth in the individual medley for Lone Peak in the Class 5A state meet last year.

The junior looked to improve her second-place finish in the 200 individual medley in last year’s Class 4A state meet. Mission accomplished, improving last year’s time by 2 seconds, and winning in 2:06.66. Plaudis started her night by swimming the second leg of Kearns’ winning relay team in the 200 medley relay. The Cougars beat Lone Peak in that relay race with a time of 1:51.60.

Keely Christenot, Kearns

The senior was seventh overall in the girls 200 freestyle in the Class 4A state meet last year. She pulled away for victory in the same event this year, touching home with a time 1:58.27 to beat back American Fork freshman Allie Hill. “I knew that my team was counting on me, and I see that in practice every day,” Christenot said. “I knew I could get in there and get a good race.”

The number of points separating first-place Lone Peak and second-place Pleasant Grove in the boys’ team competition after Day 1. The Knights, looking for a second straight team title, racked up 181.5 points in four events.

The number of seconds Devin Bunnell of Pleasant Grove shaved off his 2017 time in winning the 200-yard freestyle. Bunnell repeated his state championship in that event, winning in 1:40.20, nearly 5 seconds best than runner-up Jake Mickelson of Lone Peak.

The number of events on Day 1 of the meet for both boys and girls. Seven races each will be contested Friday, which begins at 6 p.m. at the South Davis Aquatic Center.
