Corner Canyon rides first-half run past Layton

Layton • Corner Canyon used a key run over the first and second quarters to take down Layton 73-57 in a battle of two of the state’s better girls’ basketball teams.

The Chargers capitalized on a 13-0 spurt that erased a 15-10 deficit. Junior post Jaeden Vaifanua scored six points during the run and was a force at the defensive end of the court, finishing with at least four blocks.

Corner Canyon kept Layton scoreless for six minutes over the first and second periods.

“We just started passing the ball,” Vaifanua said about the run. “When we do that, it works for everybody.”

Vaifanua finished with 14 of her game-high 30 points in the first half to help the Chargers (8-1) take a 31-24 lead into intermission.

“She’s got to have a good game,” Corner Canyon coach Jeramy Acker said. “She is a big part of what we are trying to do.”

The Chargers also got 16 points from Kemery Martin, entered averaging 23 points a contest.

Layton got 19 points from Kaitlyn Viator, while Brenda Gallegos added 18, all in the second half.
