What BYU basketball coach Kevin Young said about Kennard Davis’ suspension for alleged DUI

Davis, 20, was cited for driving under the influence by Provo police on Thursday.

(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) BYU Cougars head coach Kevin Young calls out to his team during the game between the BYU Cougars and the North Carolina Tar Heels at Delta Center on Friday, Oct. 24, 2025.

Boston • BYU guard Kennard Davis was cited for allegedly driving under the influence on Thursday morning, Provo police said.

After his arrest, the junior traveled with the team to Boston and watched as BYU lost to No. 3 UConn 86-84 inside TD Garden.

Davis was on the sideline in sweatpants, sitting on the bench during the game. He was not eligible to play, according to BYU head coach Kevin Young.

“Kennard Davis was held out for a violation of team rules,” Young said.

The Provo Police Department has not yet released the incident report from Davis’ arrest.

But police said Davis was involved in a car accident near 900 W. Center Street around 11:45 a.m. Officers suspected Davis had been driving under the influence and took him to the police station, police said.

BYU initially said it was “looking into the situation” on Thursday evening.

BYU, which is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has a strict Honor Code. Beyond the legal implications for Davis, BYU students sign a document saying they are prohibited from drinking alcohol or doing drugs.

Violations of the Honor Code can come with suspensions ranging from several games to dismissal from the team.

Young said BYU is still evaluating a suspension.

“It is to be determined on the length of [suspension],” Young said.

BYU is in the midst of its most highly anticipated basketball season in program history. It is ranked inside the top 10 and has the No. 1 recruit in the country, AJ Dybantsa.

The Cougars opened the season by beating Villanova and took UConn down to the wire.

They will play Wisconsin at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City next week — a rematch of the NCAA Tournament game a year ago.
