Was East Carolina stealing BYU’s signs? Here’s what Kalani Sitake said about his assistant coach’s tweet.

BYU’s running backs coach appeared to accuse the Pirates of stealing the Cougars’ signs.

It took 30 minutes to get going, but BYU cruised to a three-touchdown win over East Carolina on Saturday.

And after BYU boarded a plane back to Provo, BYU running backs coach Harvey Unga appeared to take a parting shot at the Pirates.

“Rough when you can’t steal signals huh,” he posted on social media.

BYU last played East Carolina in Provo back in 2022, losing on a walk-off field goal. The Cougars were held to under 400 yards against the Group of Five school and quarterback Jaren Hall was held to 144 passing yards.

Was Unga accusing ECU of stealing signs?

“I don’t know much about Harvey’s thing,” head coach Kalani Sitake said. “But teams can do whatever they want.”

This time around, BYU threw for 246 yards and gained over 400 total. It scored 34 points. Was BYU doing anything differently this time to prevent sign-stealing?

“We can huddle and do a lot of things [to prevent sign stealing] too,” Sitake said. “I’m not going to worry about it. You have to play the game. Eventually, it is going to be the guys on the field that play the game.”

As for Unga’s accusation, Sitake’s only opinion was that he’d rather have his team keep its focus on the field.

For now, he’s moving on to Colorado — with an East Carolina win finally under his belt.

“I’d rather us not talk about stuff and play the game,” Sitake finished.
