At least for now, BYU is getting the benefit of the doubt nationally. The first USA Today coaches’ poll slotted the Cougars 23rd to start the season, right behind Texas A&M and ahead of Big 12 foe Texas Tech.
BYU is one of five Big 12 teams inside the top 25 to start the year. Arizona State leads the way at No. 11. Kansas State (No. 20) and Iowa State (tied for No. 21) round out the league’s representation.
BYU is set to play Iowa State and Texas Tech on the road back-to-back in October into November.
Utah was the fifth team receiving votes. TCU, Colorado and Kansas were also represented on the unranked, but receiving votes, list.
