With Jake Retzlaff gone, who should win BYU’s starting quarterback job?

Eye on the Y: The QB’s exit opens up a three-man race in Provo.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) BYU Quarterbacks Treyson Bourguet (10) Jake Retzlaff (12) and McRae Hillstead, during the Cougars spring practice, on Thursday, Feb 27, 2025.

Former BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff has his next destination booked. The quarterback flew out to New Orleans on Tuesday morning to join the Green Wave.

He will immediately contend for the starting job at Tulane and will potentially lead the Group of Five school to a playoff. The schedule is there for them to do it.

That means the race for BYU’s starting quarterback job is officially on.

The Cougars have three serious candidates to pull from as fall camp starts next week. McCae Hillstead, Treyson Bourguet and Bear Bachmeier will be vying to take the first snap against Portland State.

Hillstead is the obvious candidate to take the lead. He played at Utah State as a freshman and had success in the Mountain West. He’s been in the program a year and fits offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick’s style.

Bourguet transferred in from Western Michigan and has also been in the program for a year. But he’s less mobile than Hillstead.

And then there’s Bachmeier, a true freshman who hasn’t completed an official practice at BYU. He went through spring ball at Stanford and has the tools — at 6-foot-3 with mobility and a live arm — to make it interesting. But will he be ready to play in four weeks?
