Sources: BYU basketball expected to hire former Louisville assistant Kahil Fennell

Fennell, who spent the last four seasons in Louisville under Chris Mack, will replace Chris Burgess on the bench

BYU is expected to hire former Louisville assistant Kahil Fennell to fill its open men’s basketball assistant coaching position, multiple sources told The Salt Lake Tribune.

Fennell spent the last four seasons at Louisville, working his way up to assistant coach. He started as the director of basketball operations under since-fired Chris Mack.

BYU wanted to hire an assistant with experience at a high-major level before moving to the Big 12. Fennell’s time in the ACC checked that box. Louisville had three winning seasons before a 13-19 campaign in 2021, when Mack was fired midseason due to an extortion case with his former assistant.

Prior to Louisville, Fennell has made stops at Portland State and Division II Texas-Permian Basin. He started as a high school coach at Alameda in California.

As a player, Fennell played in junior college for a year before becoming a three-year player at the Redlands in California.

Fennell will take over for Chris Burgess, who took the same job the University of Utah last month. Burgess spent seven seasons with BYU head coach Mark Pope, dating back to his time at Utah Valley.
