An NCAA women’s basketball committee last week didn’t put the BYU women’s basketball team in its initial rankings of the top 16 teams in the country. Cougars coach Jeff Judkins responded to that by saying his team can “beat anybody.”
But that changed Thursday when the Cougars lost 75-64 to Portland, putting the first blemish on their West Coast Conference record. They came into the game 8-0 in the conference and No. 16 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
The Cougars trailed by 14 in the third quarter, but pulled within just one late in the fourth. Portland scored the last seven points of the game to seal the victory.
Four BYU players scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Shaylee Gonzales, who had 16 points. The Cougars shot just 4 of 18 from the 3-point line.
