Cesar Puello came through with a walk-off RBI single as the Salt Lake Bees scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge the Las Vegas 51s 2-1 in front of an announced 3,366 at Smith's Ballpark on Tuesday night.
Doug Fister, who the Angels signed on May 20, pitched five innings and allowed one run on four hits and one walk in his first start for the Bees. He struck out seven and retired 10 batters in a row at one point. Fister, who made his big-league debut in 2009, has pitched in the majors for the Mariners, Tigers, Nationals and Astros.
Turning Point • Following a solo home run by Jefry Marte, Bees catcher Carlos Perez smacked a two-out triple off the right-field wall in the ninth before Puello hit a walk-off RBI single.
Bees MVP • Puello went 1-for-4, but his hit was the game-winner.
Hidden Hero • Perez was the only Bees player with two hits.
Flashing Leather • The Bees turned a pair of double plays going around the horn from third base to second base to first base. Kaleb Cowart started both with Rey Navarro serving as the middle man, receiving the initial throw at second and getting it to Jefry Marte at first base.
Quoteworthy • "I'd been doing a lot of work before I was signed, so I really feel like I'm ready to go. Right now it's just taking it day-by-day and really kind of working on the things I need to work on, you know, fine-tuning each pitch," Fister said.
Angel Angle • Right-handed pitcher Deolis Guerra cleared waivers and has been outright to Salt Lake by the Angels. The Bees placed Drew Gagnon on the temporarily inactive list and sent Alex Klonowski to Double-A Mobile. Since June 4, the Bees have added pitchers Damien Magnifico and Mike Morin from the Angels as well as free agents Jason Gurka and Fister.
