The Game • Roger Kieschnick and Stephen McGee hit back-to-back homers in the second inning Tuesday night, propelling Salt Lake to a 10-1 win over Tacoma. The Bees did not commit an error despite the fact first baseman Kyle Kubitza, second baseman Gary Brown and third baseman Alex Yarbrough played the positions for the first time in their pro careers.
Turning Point • Nursing a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, Salt Lake scored twice to break away. With two out, McGee singled home the first run. Yarbrough followed with another RBI single. The Bees eventually finished with their most lopsided win of the season.
Bees MVP • After Salt Lake starting pitchers went 4-14 in August, left-hander Nate Smith (2-3) was outstanding. He allowed one run on three hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked two. Smith threw 94 pitches, 64 for strikes.
Hidden Hero • Kubitza went 1-for-5 for the Bees, including a single in the sixth inning. He has reached base in 37 consecutive games.
Flashing Leather • With one out in the top of the first, Tacoma's Chris Taylor hit a sinking line drive to right center. Kieschnick charged in from right field and made a diving catch to help Smith retire the side in order.
Quoteworthy • "That was really fun. I don't think I've been this excited for a game in a long time." — Brown, on playing the infield for the first time since college.
Angel Angle • Salt Lake has added three players to its roster. Outfielder Daniel Roberston (shoulder) came off the disabled list. Meanwhile, pitcher Adam Austin was called up from Class AA Arkansas and catcher/designated hitter Jose Gil was brought in from Camden of the Independent League.
What's next • Tacoma (James Paxton, 0-1) vs. Salt Lake (TBA), Wednesday, 7:05 p.m. TV: none. Radio: 1280 AM.
