Jake Goebbert went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and El Paso scored at least one run in each of the first six innings Sunday during a lopsided 13-7 victory over Salt Lake at Smith's Ballpark. Josh Rutledge had four hits, including a solo homer, for the Bees, who lost for the fifth time in the last six games.
Turning Point • El Paso jumped on Salt Lake starter Alex Sanabia in the first inning. The Chihuahuas used an RBI double by Cody Decker and a two-run double by Goebbert to build a 3-0 lead. Sanabia (1-9) retired only one of the first five batters he faced. He ended up throwing 90 pitches in 31⁄3 innings.
Bees MVP • Catcher Jett Bandy went 3 for 4 with a double. He scored twice. Against El Paso this season, Bandy is 10 for 24 with three RBIs. He will play in the Pacific Coast League All-Star Game on July 15.
Hidden Hero • Outfielder Alfredo Marte went 2 for 5. Since May 15, he has hit safely in 23 of 27 games. During that stretch, he is 42-99 with 15 extra base hits and 20 RBIs.
Flashing Leather • With one on and one out in the bottom of the fifth, Salt Lake's Alex Yarbrough drilled a line drive toward the right-field corner. But El Paso's Rymer Liriano raced over and made a running catch on the warning track to save a run.
Angel Angle • The Angels have acquired catcher Rafael Lopez from the Chicago Cubs organization and assigned him to Salt Lake. A 16th-round pick in the 2011 draft out of Florida State, Lopez was hitting .276 with the Iowa Cubs before the trade.
History Lesson • On July 5, 2000, Aaron Guiel hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 17th inning to give Omaha a 10-9 victory over the Salt Lake Stingers. The game remains the longest in franchise history.
What's next • El Paso (Chris Smith, 1-3) vs. Salt Lake (Drew Rucinski, 3-4), Monday, 7:05 p.m. Radio • 1280 AM.
