Here’s how BYU football alum Andy Reid helped Taylor Swift’s engagement

Andy Reid may have given Travis Kelce the ultimate handoff — away from the field, that is.

Kelce and his now-fiancée, superstar Taylor Swift, announced their engagement on Instagram Tuesday after two years of dating. Reid played a role in their happy ending.

The former BYU tackle and current Kansas City Chiefs head coach is friends with Swift’s father, Scott, the singer revealed on the New Heights podcast (hosted by Travis and Jason Kelce) on Aug. 13.

“Andy has been coming to shows for years and stuff like that. I’ve always had a really positive vibe about Andy Reid,” Swift said. “I didn’t really know what the sports were that he was doing, but I knew that was my dad’s friend Andy Reid. I now know that he is literally the most iconic, legendary coach of all time.”

After playing for the Cougars from 1978-80, Reid started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at BYU under head coach LaVell Edwards in 1982. It eventually landed him in Kansas City as the head coach of the Chiefs in 2013 — the same year Kelce was drafted to the team. The two have won three Super Bowl championships together since.

So, when Kelce went on his New Heights podcast in July 2023 and recounted his (failed) attempt at giving a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it to Swift after her “The Eras Tour” show at Arrowhead Stadium, Reid put in a good word for his tight end.

“When you guys did the full send on the podcast, and [Travis] was like ‘Do you want to date me?’ and everyone heard it. It was the shooting your shot heard around the world. Basically, everyone who likes [Travis], which is a lot of people, started reaching out to everyone that knows me,” Swift said. “Andy was vouching for you.”

Kelce was clearly grateful for the gesture.

“That’s my guy,” Kelce said on the podcast. “I f---ing love you, Andy.”

Kelce and Swift got engaged two weeks after the “New Heights” podcast episode — which included the nod to Reid — aired. Swift also announced her 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” which comes out on Oct. 3, on the show.
