A college basketball player from Salt Lake City drowned while swimming at Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman over the weekend.
Omaha forward Deng Mayar, who attended Judge Memorial Catholic High School, died Saturday night, his college announced. Mayar was 22.
According to the Herriman Police Department, Mayar was swimming with his friend, Sa Mafutaga, when they both began to struggle in the water just before 6 p.m. on Saturday. Mafutaga, 21, made it to shore, but reentered the reservoir when he saw Mayar still in the water.
Mayar went underwater about 35 yards from shore and did not reemerge, police said. Other people at the reservoir entered the water to help Mafutaga, according to Herriman Police. He was treated at the scene, transported to the hospital and is expected to recover.
Mayar’s body was found late Saturday night, according to Herriman Police. Rescue crews from Unified Fire, South Jordan Fire and the Utah Highway Patrol dive team searched for hours before a submersible robot located Mayar around 10:40 p.m., according to the report.
“Our entire program is devastated to learn of Deng’s passing. After competing against him for two years, we were elated to add him to our team and he made tremendous progress this summer,” Chris Crutchfield, Omaha head men’s basketball coach, said in a statement. “Deng was a joy to be around and made our culture better. We will miss him greatly. Jodi and I, along with our entire program, send our hearts and prayers to Deng’s family, friends and teammates.”
Mayar joined the University of Nebraska Omaha men’s basketball team this past offseason after transferring from the University of North Dakota, where he played two seasons. The 6-foot-8, Mayar averaged 6.3 points and 4 rebounds for the Fighting Hawks last season. He made 42 career appearances and 15 starts.
“Our hearts are broken to hear the tragic news of Deng’s passing,” Paul Sather, North Dakota head men’s basketball coach, said in a statement. “He was a wonderful person with a heart the size of a gym. Our thoughts are with his parents and family, along with all his teammates from UND and UNO. As competitive as he was on the court, he had a gentle nature and kind soul off the court. Deng will be greatly missed by all of those that knew and loved him.”
Mayar was a four-year varsity student athlete at Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City before playing as a member of the Howard Junior College men’s basketball team. As a senior at Judge Memorial, Mayar averaged 17.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. The team finished as regional champions and placed fourth in the Utah state tournament.
Angelina Mayar, Deng’s sister, started a GoFundMe page called, “In Loving Memory of Deng: Help Us Lay Him to Rest.” More $16,000 had been donated as of Monday morning.
“My brother Deng was an extraordinary son, brother, friend, classmate and teammate,” Angelina wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Deng’s 23rd birthday would have been on August 31st, just a couple of weeks away.”
“Deng was goal-oriented, determined, and disciplined. He was a good person. He set his sights high and worked tirelessly to achieve his dreams. But just as important as his goals was his heart, he loved others deeply and genuinely. Basketball wasn’t just his passion, it was also a reflection of his character: the commitment, teamwork, and care he gave on the court mirrored the way he treated his family, friends, and everyone he encountered. To know Deng was to love him, and to cross paths with him was a blessing. He made everyone feel like family.”
