Here’s how to see an all-women’s sports showcase in Utah

The Beehive Bash will be held over the weekend.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Running back Gina Magana (26) leads the Falconz, as they take the field for playoff action between the San Diego Rebellion and the Utah Falconz, on Thursday, June 8, 2023.

For the first time in Utah, a day will be dedicated to showcasing only the Beehive State’s women’s sports programs.

Six teams will gather on Saturday at Highland High School and play three different sports in effort to highlight the diverse programs offered in Utah for women and nonbinary people. Teams will play rugby, ultimate frisbee and football.

The Salt City Slugs, Boulder Babes and Utah Vipers are local rugby teams that compete in Division 1 and 2 of USA Club Women’s Rugby. Members of the Provo Peaks rugby team are also playing, as are members of BYU’s extramural squad.

The Utah Wild will be showcasing ultimate frisbee, while the Utah Falconz will play football.

“These athletes and these sports are often overlooked,” Falconz captain and starting safety Kim Krinke said in a statement. “But what we find, again and again, is that when people are exposed to our teams, they fall in love with who we are, what we’re doing, and especially what happens on the field.”

The event is another attempt to sway Salt Lake City officials into transforming the stadium area currently occupied by the Salt Lake Bees into an sports complex exclusively for professional and semi-professional women’s sports in Utah. A proposal called She Plays Here was one of three winners of a design contest last year.

Tickets to event are $20 if purchased through the Utah Falconz ore Utah Wild websites. They are $25 at the gate. Falconz and Wild season ticket holders, as well as children under 12, get in for free.

“We’re even stronger together,” Utah Wild captain Kendra Miller said. “And that’s saying something because, honestly, we’re pretty strong separately, too. These teams are made up of players who had to fight hard for a chance to play at the highest levels of their sports in this state. It’s going to be inspirational to see everyone play on the same field.”
