“It’s been a quick start to the 2024 campaign for the Grantsville Cowboys baseball team, to the tune of nine straight victories out of the gate. And one major component is senior Brett Darrow.

Darrow & Co. are hoping to better last season’s results, when Grantsville was eliminated in the third round of the Class 3A playoffs.

“Last year, we didn’t do too hot at the start,” Darrow said just before the Cowboys went to 9-0 with a victory over Morgan. “I feel like we’re more of a family than a team. We’re just more in tune with each other.”

Personally, Darrow also feels improvement has taken place.

“Yeah, I definitely have,” Darrow said. “I feel like I’m seeing the ball better at bat and fielding the ball pretty well, too.”

With a .520 batting average, Darrow has also slugged three home runs and swatted four doubles. The senior plays three positions for the Cowboys, saying that his favorites are, “Probably third, but catcher is a close second.”

And the third?

Darrow has worked eight innings on the mound, striking out nine batters and sporting a 1.68 earned run average — not that he’s all that aware of that stat.

“Pitching is going pretty good, too. I don’t know what my ERA is right now, but I’m definitely doing better than last year,” he said.
