No. 17 Utah lacrosse team loses to No. 3 Notre Dame in first round of NCAA Championships

The third-ranked Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team defeated No. 17 Utah 20-7 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Championships on Saturday in South Bend, Ind.

The Utes finished the season at 12-5 overall, going 9-0 in the ASUN conference.

Utah finished the game with 37 shots, including 23 on goal, also recording 27 ground balls and nine caused turnovers against the Fighting Irish.

Junior Jared Andreala led Utah in goals, scoring a hat trick along with two ground balls. Redshirt freshman Ryan Stines, junior Carson Moyer, sophomore Trey Akabane and junior Tyler Bradbury scored one goal each.

Utah was held scoreless in the first quarte for the first time since the Utes’ game against Jacksonville on March 31. With Utah unable to find the back of the net, Notre Dame took an 8-0 lead into the second quarter. Utah scored three straight goals to close the gap in the third quarter, but 8-3 was as close as the Utes would get.

The Utes, in their fifth season as a Division I program, won 22 games in the past two seasons, including 14 straight ASUN games, earning back-to-back regular-season titles. They also won the conference tournament this year to reach the NCAA Championships for the first time.
