Your guide to traffic closures during the Salt Lake Marathon, Utes spring football game

Those living in or visiting the city should be prepared for delays, SLCPD says.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Weather indicative of the Pacific Northwest makes a breaching whale seem more appropriate as runners endure cold wet conditions as they participate in the Salt Lake City Marathon on Saturday, April 23, 2022.

The Salt Lake Marathon and Utah football’s annual spring game are imminent.

Also imminent are road closures that frustrate drivers if they’re unprepared.

Here’s what you need to know to avoid traffic and trouble on Saturday.

The marathon occurs on Saturday and starts at 6 a.m. with the bike tour. The main marathon and half-marathon start at 7 a.m., The 10K skate starts at 7:05 a.m., the 10K run at 7:10 a.m. and the 5K run at 7:15 a.m.

The routes for the marathon, half-marathon and bike tour start on Wasatch Drive near the University of Utah and end on the corner of State Street and 400 South. The streets around the finish line are closed as early as midnight and as late as 6 p.m.

Other street closures start as early as 5:30 a.m. and go as late as 2 p.m.

“The Salt Lake City Police Department continues to work with the event organizers to lessen any impact on our community,” the police department said in a news release. “To ensure the safety of race participants and spectators, some segments of the racecourse require 100% closure. Some of these select street closures could be in place for up to seven hours. All roadway users are encouraged to follow all posted signs and directions from officers along the racecourse.”

Utah football’s Red and White game — recently renamed the 22 Forever Game after late former players Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe — starts at noon on Saturday. That’s after some surrounding streets are scheduled to be closed, but fans who want to tailgate or get in their seats early may experience some delays around the campus.

Public transportation around the city will have extended hours. The Trax blue line from Draper Town Center Station will start service at 4:24 a.m. and arrive at Medical Center, near the starting line, at 5:18 a.m. Trains with direct service to Medical Center will run every 20 minutes until 5:46 a.m.
