Sundance, Alta add lifts; Deer Valley, Brighton expand beginner areas

After 60 years in operation, the old two-person lift, along with the Sunnyside lift that serves the same area, in in the process of being replaced with a six-person high-speed lift.

BRIAN HEAD RESORT

Brian Head Resort Brian Head Resort, the southernmost ski area in Utah, was the first resort in the state to open this season.

BRIGHTON

(Brighton Resort) Skiers and snowboarders who could get to Brighton Resort on short notice were able to nab first chair for the Big Cottonwood Canyon's opening day Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022. The resort posted that it was open about 10 minutes before it started allowing guests on the lifts at 11 a.m.

Notable: Added lights to Ziggy and Pine Martin trails off the Snake Creek Lift. Added the Caterpillar lift, a 400-foot-long surface lift near the bottom of Great Western and added snowmaking and a new run to the beginner area. Reduced the age at which children ski free to 6 and under. A pass for ages 7-12 is $149. Started a free kids club for ages 12 and under with weekly activities. Joined the Boyne Rewards customer loyalty program.

CHERRY PEAK

DEER VALLEY

Parking: Free at Snow Park Lodge lots

Notable: New lift, Burns Express, now extends off the upgraded Snowflake lift to connect the Wide West learning area with Little Baldy Peak. The conveyor lifts were moved to the former location of Burns lift and lead up the mountain. Those are part of a $6 million upgrade to the learning center. A new restaurant, Cast & Cut, will reside in the Snow Park Lodge. The resort is planning to break ground on its reimagined Snow Park Village in spring 2023.

EAGLE POINT

Open Friday-Sunday from March 3 until April 2, 2023. Starting in January, the entire resort can be rented out on weekdays for a base price of $15,000 for up to 200 people.

NORDIC VALLEY

PARK CITY MOUNTAIN RESORT

(Matt Chi | Park City Mountain) Fresh snow blankets the ground at Park City Mountain Resort, which reported receiving 11 inches near the summit of the Bonanza lift as of Tuesday morning from the first storm of the season, which began Saturday, Oct. 21, 2022.

Opening date: Nov. 18

Acres/vertical drop: 7,300/3,200 feet

Lifts: 37 (4 D, 7 T, 4 Q, 10 HSQ, 6 HS6, 4 G, 6 surface)

Walk-up tickets available: Yes but ticket sales may be capped

Parking: Reservations required. Cost is $25 daily from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the First Time, Main and Silver King lots and $40 for the parking garage at the main Mountain Village. Cars with 4 or more people park free with a reservation. Free daily parking at The Canyons in the Cabriolet lot, at all resort lots after 1 p.m. and at Park City High on weekends and holidays. Notable: Expanded snow-melt patio at Red Tail Grill, at The Canyons next to the Orange Bubble Express, will seat 100 and be adjacent to a new ski beach. A plan to upgrade the Silverlode lift to an 8-pack and to reconfigure the Eagle and Eaglet and replace them with a 6-pack lift has been tabled until at least next season.

POWDER MOUNTAIN

SNOWBASIN

SNOWBIRD

SOLITUDE

The Yurt, which previously only hosted snow-shoe-accessed dinners, will open for on-hill lunch and drinks. And Wyssen towers will be installed for avalanche mitigation in Honeycomb Canyon. Solitude will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays until after the spring switch to daylight savings time, when it will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SUNDANCE

Also added more lights so all runs on the face of the mountain except the expert ones are available for night skiing.
