Weber State played its first home football game in nearly a year and a half Saturday. It took the Wildcats a bit to get going, but they rallied from a halftime deficit and pulled out an 18-13 win over UC Davis at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.
Weber State (2-0) entered the week ranked second in the FCS Top 25 and won its ninth straight home game.
UC Davis, ranked 23rd in the country, jumped out to a 10-0 halftime lead but the Wildcats got going in the second half, outsourcing the Aggies 15-0.
“It was a slow start, which I worried about coming off a bye week, and we didn’t look sharp in the first half,” said Weber State coach Jay Hill. “I thought we got going on offense and defense in the third quarter against a dang good team. We have a long way to go but hopefully, this just propels us onto the next one.”
Dontae McMillan capped a 75-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown with 8:49 to play in the third quarter to put the Wildcats on the board. Haze Hadley hit Logan Snyder for a two-point conversion to make it 10-8.
A few minutes later after a defensive hold, Daniel Wright Jr. scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to put the Wildcats ahead. Both teams added a field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats managed just 247 yards of total offense, but their defense did force two Aggie turnovers.
Weber State’s Bronson Barron finished the day 13 of 29 passing for 126 yards. Josh Davis had 20 rushes for 71 yards. David Ames had four catches for 38 yards and Ty MacPherson had three for 50 yards.
On defense, Conner Mortensen led the way with 11 tackles, including nine solo, and 3.5 tackles for loss. Desmond Williams had 10 tackles and a forced fumble.
