Westminster College and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference have joined the growing trend of opting to play only conference opponents in sports this fall.
The RMAC President’s Council voted during its meeting Tuesday to go with a conference-only schedule for team sports. The decision will affect the Griffins’ women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer programs.
Teams can begin practicing Aug. 24. Competition can begin Sept. 18. That day, women’s volleyball will host Chadron State for its opener while men’s soccer will host the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
Men’s and women’s golf and cross country are also contested in the fall and will see delayed starts.
Westminster student athletes have resumed individual training at home and in campus athletic facilities under strict protocols and after completing daily symptom checks, according to a news release.
The RMAC is made up of 15 members that compete at the NCAA Division II level.
At the D-I level, the Pac-12 and Big Ten have already opted for conference-only slates, while the ACC, Big 12 and SEC are considering following suit.
