Bozeman, Mont. • Ola Jordheim won his first career race in men’s Nordic on Saturday to lead the Utah ski team on the final day of the RMISA Championships, as the Utes finished second to Denver in the team standings, 688-678.
Colorado finished third with 643.5 points.
Jordheim has four career podium finishes. Teammate Bjorn Riksaasen earned his first career podium with a third-place finish.
“I honestly didn’t think this day would ever come,” Jordheim said. “Skiing along with my teammates in front of the race is incredible. Everything went my way today: My body felt the best of the year, skis were amazing and a little luck in the end made this by far the best day of the year.”
Leah Lange led the Utah women with a fourth-place finish, her seventh top-five finish of the season.
Lacrosse
Utah 15, Jacksonville 11 • In Jacksonville, Fla., Jimmy Perkins and Colin Burke combined for seven goals and five assists as the Utes (3-2) defeated the Dolphins (2-2) in the Moe’s Lacrosse Classic.
Jacksonville led 2-0 early before the Utes reeled off six-straight goals to take 6-2 lead with 9:48 left in the second period. Jacksonville tied the game at 7-7 with 2:05 remaining before halftime, but back-to-back goals by Burke and Cole Brams gave the Utes a 9-7 lead at the half. Utah scored two goals in the first five minutes of the third period, by Burke and Perkins, to go up 11-7. Jacksonville was unable to come closer than two goals the remainder of the game.
Men’s basketball
Portland State 89, Weber State 83 • In Ogden, Rashaad Goolsby scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Vikings defeated the Wildcats.
Holland Woods added 17 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals for the Vikings (16-14, 10-8 Big Sky Conference), while Lamar Hamrick chipped in 16 points.
Jerrick Harding had 20 points for the Wildcats (11-17, 7-10). Cody John added 19 points and six rebounds. Tim Fuller had 14 points. Dima Zdor had a career-high 18 rebounds.
The Vikings improve to 2-0 against the Wildcats for the season. Portland State defeated Weber State 92-76 on Jan. 20.
Women’s basketball
BYU 57, Loyola Marymount 42 • In Provo, Paisley Johnson scored 20 points, Brenna Chase Drollinger added 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Sarah Hamson chipped in with nine rebounds and seven blocks as the Cougars (18-10, 13-5 WCC)won on senior day.
BYU’s defense held the Lions (7-24, 3-15) to just 19% shooting in the first half (6 of 33) while allowing just one made field goal in the second period.
Baseball
Utah 9, Texas Arlington 5 • In Arlington, Texas, freshman Trey Clarkson went 3 for 5 with four RBIs and scored two runs while hitting his first career home run, and the Utes (4-5) evened their series with the Mavericks (7-3).
New Mexico 12, BYU 1 • In Albuquerque, N.M., the Cougars were held to three hits a day after erupting for 18 runs. Cutler Clawson’s homer to lead off the fifth inning accounted for the only run for the Cougars (6-6).
Freshman Brock Watkins added the other two hits for the Cougars.
The Lobos improved to 8-3.
Men’s volleyball
No. 2 BYU 3, No. 13 Stanford 0 • In Provo, the Cougars swept the Cardinal 25-12, 25-21, 25-22 on Saturday in front of a crowd of 5,817 at the Smith Fieldhouse, the highest-attended home match since 2005.
“We had some great support from our volleyball community and we’ve got some really loyal volleyball fans,” BYU coach Shawn Olmstead said. “Now, we’re looking forward to the challenge of going on the road. We won’t be here in the Smith Fieldhouse, but volleyball is still volleyball and it’s just a different gym.”
The Cougars finished with a season-high 15.5 blocks in their 16th-consecutive win of the season to remain undefeated. The 16-0 record is already the second-best start to a season in program history as well as the second-longest winning streak in the rally era.
Outside hitter Zach Eschenberg set a career-high of six blocks while totaling eight kills, four digs and an ace. Setter Wil Stanley had five blocks to match his career-high while pacing the team with 30 assists. Opposite hitter Gabi Garcia Fernandez led all players with 12 kills and three aces.
