Bingham High coach John Lambourne is retiring after 20 years with the Miners

Steve Griffin | The Salt Lake Tribune Bingham High head football coach John Lambourne, center, talks with his assistant coaches before practice on The Bingham High School football field in Draper, Utah Wednesday, August 26, 2015. Lambourne was named head coach following the retirement of Dave Peck and takes over one of the state's most successful football programs.

Longtime Bingham High football coach John Lambourne is stepping down, though he will remain at the school as a faculty member.

“John has decided after 36 years of coaching high school football, 20 at Bingham, to retire from coaching," Bingham High principal Rodney Shaw said in an e-mail to The Salt Lake Tribune. “He will still be teaching health at Bingham High School."

Initial reports suggested that at least some of Lambourne’s staff might be leaving with him, but Shaw said that is not the case,

”Many of his current assistants have expresses an interest in staying with the program, with only one that I know of, that has decided to step down for personal reasons," Shaw added.

Jackson Peck, who is on Bingham’s coaching staff, confirmed Monday night on Twitter that Lambourne was leaving.

“Coach just wants to do something new with his life,” Peck wrote. “He deserves a well-earned break. We love and support him and his decision.”

A longtime Bingham assistant coach, Lambourne replaced the legendary Dave Peck as the Miners head coach in 2014. He went on to compile a 57-9 record over the next five years, including this season’s 8-3 finish.

The Miners won state championships in 2016 and 2017 under Lambourne and became regulars in the national prep football rankings. Under Peck and Lambourne, Bingham evolved into the gold standard in Utah high school football.

Lambourne informed the team of his retirement on Monday, during the school day.

The assistant coach who will join Labourne in leaving the program is offensive line coach Keith Chatelain, who stepped down on Monday as well.

Bingham was eliminated from the postseason earlier this month with a 20-16 loss to East in the Class 6A quarterfinals.
