Southern Utah falls at South Dakota State 43-7

Southern Utah closed out its nonconference schedule Saturday, falling to South Dakota State 43-7 in Brookings, S.D.

The Jackrabbits, third in the FCS rankings, led 21-0 before the Thunderbirds scored on quarterback Chris Helbig’s touchdown run with 29 seconds left in the first half to get within 14 points.

The second half was all South Dakota State, as the Jackrabbits (3-1) scored 22 consecutive points.

Helbig finished with 211 yards passing.

Lance Lawson was his top target with nine catches for 75 yards, and Isaiah Diego-Williams caught four passes for 23 yards.

James Felila led the way on the ground for the Thunderbirds (1-3) with 14 carries for 46 yards.

The Thunderbirds return home to Eccles Coliseum next weekend to open Big Sky play against the Cal Poly Mustangs.
