Utah Royals pick up Portland player to replace injured Lytle

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Portland Thorns FC forward Mallory Weber (26) and Utah Royals FC defender Becky Sauerbrunn (4) go for the ball, in soccer action between Utah Royals FC and Portland Thorns FC, at Rio Tinto Stadium, Saturday, April 28, 2018.

The Utah Royals have made a roster move that addresses the need to replace an injured player.

The Royals on Monday acquired striker Mallory Weber off the National Women’s Soccer League’s waiver wire, the club announced. Weber is formerly of the Portland Thorns. She will be with the Royals for the remainder of the 2019 season. She played in 44 games and scored one goal with Portland. She was traded there in 2016.

In addition, Utah announced that Taylor Lytle has been placed on the season-ending injury list. She suffered a foot injury before the season started and has been seen in a cast ever since.

“Taylor’s injury was tough for all of us. She worked very hard through preseason to position herself as a strong competitor for this year and the gaps the World Cup creates in our roster,” Royals general manager Stephanie Lee said in a club release. “I know she’ll continue to work hard through this injury and come back strong — we look forward to that.”
