Richfield wins Class 3A baseball title; Grantsville completes three-peat in 3A softball

The Richfield Wildcats are Class 3A baseball champions.

On Saturday the Wildcats won their first state baseball crown since 1992 by defeating Summit Academy 9-3 in Kearns in the Class 3A title game. The No. 1-seeded Wildcats finished the year 25-3. Richfield punched its ticket to the championship game Friday by beating Summit Academy 8-4. Summit Academy earned a rematch with Richfield by topping Union 8-7 earlier Saturday.

The Milford Tigers won their first state baseball championship in school history Saturday at Dixie State, beating Enterprise in back-to-back games. Milford came up through the losers’ bracket by beating Kanab 5-0 Saturday. The Tigers beat Enterprise 11-9 earlier Saturday to force a winner-take-all title game in a rematch in St. George. After winning the last game 9-4, the Tigers were able to hoist the trophy.

Enterprise High didn’t go home empty-handed this weekend, though. The Wolves’ softball team won the Class 2A softball championship, knocking off defending champions Gunnison Valley 6-5 at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex.

The Grantsville softball team won its third straight state title in Spanish Fork, knocking off Manti 12-2. Grantsville was sent to the losers’ bracket on Friday after a 7-6 loss to Manti, but rattled off three straight wins to get back to the title game for a rematch. Grantsville won the first game 11-1 and then secured another Class 3A crown with its 12-2 win Saturday afternoon.
