San Diego State is back as a BYU men’s basketball opponent. Cougars, Aztecs will play twice in next two years.

Provo • San Diego State’s student section for men’s basketball is notoriously obnoxious and rowdy. Or is it just juvenile, trashy and boorish?

Whatever the case, The Show — as it calls itself — will get another chance to heckle BYU players and mock their faith after the Cougars silenced it in their last visit to Viejas Arena in 2011, Jimmer Fredette’s senior season.

BYU and San Diego State announced Tuesday they have agreed to a home-and-home basketball series, with the first game to be played Dec. 22 at SDSU and the second game to be played at the Marriott Center on Nov. 9, 2019.

December’s game will be the first meeting betwen the former Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West rivals since SDSU beat BYU at the 2014 Maui Invitational in double overtime. It will be the first in San Diego since No. 7 BYU routed the No. 6 Aztecs 80-67 behind 25 points from Fredette, who was the intended target of a half-filled water bottle thrown from the student section after the game. The projectile barely missed the star’s head.

BYU holds a commanding 48-24 advantage in the all-time series.

Longtime SDSU coach Steve Fisher retired after the 2016-17 season and has been replaced by his assistant, Brian Dutcher. The Aztecs went 22-11 overall and 11-7 in the MWC last season and won the MWC conference tournament.

Some SDSU students dressed up like Mormon missionaries — donning white shirts, ties and bicycle helmets — for BYU’s visits when the Cougars were in the Mountain West.

BYU coach Dave Rose said after the WCC’s Saint Mary’s was left out of the NCAA Tournament in March that the message from the selection committee was to play a more difficult nonconference schedule. It appears BYU is doing that.

The Cougars will play host to Houston, Utah State and Utah Valley next season. They will play at Illinois State, Mississippi State, San Diego State and Weber State and will play UNLV and Utah on neutral courts within the respective schools’ home cities.

What BYU’s roster will look like next season remains to be seen. Leading scorer Elijah Bryant will forgo his senior season and turn professional, while second-leading scorer and leading rebounder Yoeli Childs is still contemplating his future.

Childs is testing the NBA draft waters, but has not hired an agent. He has until May 30 to withdraw from the draft.

Tuesday, CBS Sports reported that Childs was not one of the 70 players invited to the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago later this month. it is a signal that the NBA believes Childs will not be drafted if he leaves his name in the draft.
