State colleges: Utah unable to hold off No. 17 UCLA in baseball

UCLA, ranked 17th in the nation, scored a run in the top of the eighth to tie the score, then added three runs in the ninth on the way to a 6-3 victory over Utah in a Pac-12 baseball game at Smith’s Ballpark on Saturday.

Oliver Dunn went 2 for 3, homered, drove in two runs and scored twice to lead Utah (9-24, 4-7).

After Dunn’s solo homer in the first put the Utes ahead, the Bruins (21-9, 10-4) scored twice in the second inning for a 2-1 lead.

The Utes went back on top in the third inning. Matt Richardson reached on an error and scored on an RBI double from Dunn. Dunn then came home on a single by Tom Rykker, who was out at second.

Cal State Bakersfield 6-7, Utah Valley 2-6 • In Orem, the Wolverines (12-21, 4-7 WAC) led 5-1 through seven innings but gave up six runs in the eighth and dropped the back end of the doubleheader at UCCU Ballpark.

Five errors proved to be costly, including three in the eighth inning as the Roadrunners (11-22, 3-5) rallied. UVU’s Trevor Peterson drove in three runs in a 3-for-5 performance, which included a home run and a double.

In the first game, Paul Estrada had two of UVU’s five hits and scored a run.

Portland 8, BYU 6 • In Portland, Ore., the Pilots (13-20, 6-9 West Coast Conference) defeated the Cougars (18-15, 7-8) to claim the series.

Keaten Kringlen went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI for BYU. Noah Hill doubled and drove in two runs.

Softball

BYU 9, Pacific 0 • In Stockton, Calif., the Cougars (24-19, 5-1 WCC) scored nine runs on eight hits while holding the Tigers (12-25, 2-4) to just two hits in a game stopped after five innings, due to the NCAA eight-run rule.

Lexi Tarrow hit a three-run homer, and Libby Sugg and Alexa Strid each drove in two runs.

Kerisa Viramontes did not give up any walks and recorded four strikeouts.

Utah State 0-7, Colorado State 3-6 • In Logan, the Aggies (14-24, 4-10 Mountain West) split with the Rams (22-12, 5-6), dropping the first game of the doubleheader 3-0 and coming back to win the second 7-6.

USU’s Bailee Trapp and Brina Buttacavoli homered in the victory.

Montana 4, Southern Utah 3 • In Cedar City, the Thunderbirds (6-31, 3-9 Big Sky) fell to the Grizzlies (19-22, 7-5).

Southern Utah went ahead in the second inning when Nicole Simonson’s RBI single scored Mikaela Thomson.

Montana scored twice in the top of the seventh and held off the Thunderbirds in the bottom half of the inning.

Utah Valley 10, UMKC 6 • In Kansas City, Mo., Basia Query and Kaylee Bott combined to go 5 for 8 with three homers, seven runs batted in and three runs scored as the Wolverines (13-22, 5-3 WAC) completed a three-game sweep of the Roos (10-31, 0-9).

Beach volleyball

Utah at Long Beach State tournament • In Long Beach, Calif., the Utes (2-6) went 2-1 on the first day of the tournament, sandwiching a 4-1 win over Long Beach City College and a 4-1 win over CSU Bakersfield around a 5-0 loss to the tournament host, No. 6-ranked Long Beach State.

Men’s golf

Utah at ASU Thunderbird Invitational • In Tempe, Ariz., the Utes are in ninth after the first and second rounds at Karsten Golf Course.

Utah heads into Sunday’s final round with a combined score of 4-over par (290-282—572).

No. 25 Arizona State and No. 27 UNLV are tied for first place at 18-under par.

Football

Weber State spring game • In Ogden, the Wildcats’ offense defeated the defense 39-26 in a modified scoring format. Braden Miles completed 8 of 12 passes for 130 yards. Raoul Johnson and Spencer Niutupuivaha both had interceptions, and Conner Mortensen had two sacks.

Women’s tennis

Pepperdine 4, BYU 0 • In Malibu, Calif., the Cougars (11-8, 4-3 WCC) came up short against the ninth-ranked Waves (18-1, 7-0).

Track and field

Mark Faldmo Invitational • In Logan, host Utah State won 13 events, including two by Leaugen Fray, who won the men’s high jump (6 feet, 11 inches) and long jump (23-4). Sam Nelson claimed the men’s pole vault title, clearing 16-111/2, good for sixth on USU’s all-time outdoor lists.

Utah’s Mesa Weidle placed second in the women’s 400 meters (57.28 seconds) and Nicole Griffiths took second in the women’s 800 (2 minutes, 15.06 seconds).

BYU’s Madie Mathews won the women’s 100 (12.23) and 200 (24.18).

Weber State’s Daunte Atkinson won the men’s 400 (48.33) and anchored the 4x400 relay team that won with a time of 3:16.68.

UVU’s Darcy Allen won the women’s discus throw (156-8).
