State colleges: Utah suffers 2-1 loss at No. 1 Washington in softball

Seattle • The Utah softball team lost at No. 1 Washington, 2-1, Sunday in the final game of their Pac-12 series.

Utes pitcher Hailey Hilburn threw a complete game, allowing four hits.

After the teams combined for three hitless innings, the Utes (17-18, 2-10) got on the scoreboard in the fourth. BreOnna Castaneda was hit by a pitch with one out, then moved up to second on a grounder by Alyssa Barrera. Heather Bowen then delivered for the Utes, smacking a single to right for a 1-0 lead.

Washington (39-2, 10-2) finally got to Hilburn in the fifth as Amirah Milloy led off with a double. After taking a close pitch with two strikes, Noelle Hee smacked a two-run homer to put the Huskies in the lead.

Utah’s best chance to get even was in the sixth as Julie Noskin hit a one-out single and stole second. However, Taran Alvelo induced a fly ball to center and a pop up in foul ground to end the inning.

Fresno State 15, Utah State 1, 5 innings • In Fresno, Calif., Utah State (13-22, 3-9 Mountain West) was never able to put together a comeback after falling behind early and ended its weekend in a five-inning loss to the Bulldogs (24-15, 7-2).

Sophomore designated player/catcher Allanah Alvarado had the best day at the plate for the Aggies, as she went 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and an RBI.

Utah in Hawaii Queen’s Cup • In Honolulu, the Utes (0-5) wrapped up competition at the Hawaii Queen’s Cup, dropping two matches.

The No. 5 duo of Lauga Gauta and Lauren Sproule were the only Utes to pick up a win on Sunday, as Utah fell to No. 3-ranked Hawaii, 5-0, in semifinal No. 2, and then dropped a third-place match to No. 16-ranked Loyola Marymount, 4-1.

Baseball

Grand Canyon 5, Utah Valley 2 • In Phoenix, Utah Valley University suffered its third straight loss, falling to Grand Canyon University at GCU Ballpark.

The Lopes (17-14, 8-1 Western Athletic Conference) swept the series from the Wolverines (12-18, 4-5).

Jackson Overlund and Ryan Eastburn had two hits apiece for UVU with Eastburn also driving in a run. Quin Cotton had three hits and drove in two for Grand Canyon.
