The Los Angeles Kings announced Friday that they will host a preseason game in downtown Salt Lake City on Sept. 24 against the Vancouver Canucks. The preseason hockey event is being dubbed “the Salt Lake Shootout.”

It’s the first time in 10 years that an NHL hockey preseason game will take place in Utah.

There will be more games to come, too.

The Kings also will hold future preseason games at Vivint Smart Home Arena in 2019 and 2020 to close out a three-year agreement on the deal to bring preseason NHL hockey back to Salt Lake City.

“As a whole, the Kings are excited to return to Salt Lake City and, in particular, to play at Vivint Smart Home Arena,” said Kings president and Hockey Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille in a statement. “Salt Lake City is a wonderful area with great hockey tradition. This game is special and this series is something we are very much looking forward to.”

L.A. already has some Utah ties to its roster. Forward Trevor Lewis, a Brighton High product, has spent the last 10 seasons with the Kings. Lewis, 31, has helped the Kings win two Stanley Cup titles in 2012 and 2014 during his time in L.A.

L.A. added another Utah product to its roster this week.

The team announced Thursday that it signed former Skyline High player Daniel Brickley. The defenseman was a highly sought-after college free agent after the conclusion of his junior year at Minnesota State University. The 6-foot-3 and 203-pound Brickley was part of the U.S. national team pool and played with the U.S. at last year’s World Championships.
