Musicians from local colleges

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members Daryl Hall & John Oates met while attending Temple University in Philadelphia and produced six No. 1 hits, notably “Maneater.”

Tom Scholz, guitarist and founder of the Boston band, graduated from MIT in mechanical engineering. Boston is considered among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s biggest snubs.

“Invincible” is the story of Eagles fan Vince Papale, who improbably made the team after being discovered in an open tryout. Elizabeth Banks was cast as his bartending girlfriend.

“The Fighter,” a biography of boxer Mickey Ward, was based in Lowell, Mass., not far from Boston. Amy Adams plays his bartending girlfriend, who becomes his wife.

“The Goldbergs,” currently airing on ABC, depicts a Philadelphia family in the 1980s, with Philly sports memorabilia shown regularly.

“Cheers,” which ran from 1982 to 1993 on NBC and was syndicated long afterward, was set in a Boston bar with frequent references to sports teams.

Jazz trades

The Jazz sent guard Jeff Malone to Philadelphia for Jeff Hornacek, below, in the move that’s generally credited with lifting the team to the NBA Finals level.

Eight years earlier, the Jazz sent forward Fred Roberts to Boston in exchange for the Celtics coming to Provo for two exhibitions, although only one game ended up being played at the Marriott Center.

Famous fans

Jon Bon Jovi, whose group is in the 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction class, is a longtime friend of New England coach Bill Belichick, stemming from their time together in New Jersey, and fan of the Patriots.

Mike Trout, above, a Los Angeles Angels outfielder and a possible future Baseball Hall of Famer, is a lifelong Philadelphia fan, having watched games from the cheapest seats of Veterans Stadium as a child.

World Series pitchers from Utah

Cyprus alumnus Scott Eyre, right, of Philadelphia retired both batters he faced — actually, the same opponent twice — in the 2008 World Series, and remains the only Utah high school graduate to appear for the winning team in the Series.

Dixie product Bruce Hurst of Boston would have been named the 1986 World Series MVP, but the Red Sox lost Game 6 to the New York Mets via Bill Buckner’s error and then dropped Game 7, with Hurst getting a no-decision.

BYU ties

Former BYU offensive lineman Andy Reid coached the Philadelphia Eagles for 14 seasons, reaching one Super Bowl and losing to New England.

BYU basketball star Danny Ainge, right, has led the Boston Celtics’ basketball operation since 2003, appearing twice in the NBA Finals and winning one championship.
