Utah Valley routs Weber State, 83-59

Orem • Akolda Manyang scored 25 points pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked six shots and Utah Valley defeated in-state rival Weber State 83-56 Wednesday night.

The rebounds and points are both career highs for Manyang and he tied his best mark with the half dozen blocks. Conner Toolson added 16 points, Kenneth Ogbe 15 and Brandon Randolph 10 for the Wolverines (6-3).

Utah Valley won the battle of the glass 43-27, shot 60 percent from the floor, blocked 10 Weber shots and also had four steals. The rebounds led to Utah Valley outscoring Weber State 52-26 in the paint.

Former Utah forward Brekkott Chapman scored 15 points for the Wildcats (4-4) with six assists, Jerrick Harding scored 16 points and Dusty Baker 14.

Utah Valley, which never trailed, broke away from a 27-all tie with 6:24 remaining in the first half and led 43-29 by the break. The 16-2 run including back-to-back dunks by Manyang.

Southern Utah 94, Long Beach State 89 • In Cedar City, Brandon Better scored 26 points, Jadon Cohee added 25 — both career highs — and Southern Utah beat Long Beach State.

Better was fouled on a driving layup with 1:12 remaining and it bounced in off the back rim. He added the free throw for an 88-86 lead. Southern Utah made its next six free throws — with four by Better — to seal it.

Christian Musoko had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Southern Utah (5-3). Jamal Aytes added 12 points and Jacob Calloway 10.

Bryan Alberts led Long Beach State with 25 points and Gabe Levin added 24.

Utah State 62, UC Irvine 59 • In Logan, sophomore guard Koby McEwen scored seven of his nine points in the second half, including the go-ahead basket with 9:07 remaining, and Utah State held on for the win.

The Anteaters pulled within 60-59 with 38 seconds left. Then Utah State guard Sam Merrill, who scored a game-high 13 points, missed a layup 14 seconds later.

On the Anteaters’ final possession, USU (5-5) senior forward Alexis Dargenton provided solid help-side defense, forcing Worku to put up an off-balance shot that came up short from just outside the key.

Women’s basketball

Utah State 76, BYU 69 • In Provo, Utah State defeated BYU for the first time since Dec. 7, 1978, ending a 28-game winning streak for the Cougars in the series. It is USU’s second-ever win in the Marriott Center and the first since Feb. 9, 1974. Utah State is 4-35 all time against BYU.

Aggies junior guard Rachel Brewster matched her season high with 20 points. Sophomore guard Olivia West had 19 points for USU (2-6), which snapped a six-game losing streak. Sophomore guard/forward Shannon Dufficy had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Eliza West had eight assists.

BYU (3-5) senior Cassie Broadhead Devashrayee led all scorers with 23 points.
