NCAA basketball: Winslow leads No. 4 Duke past Fairfield

Durham, N.C. • Freshman Justise Winslow scored 18 points and No. 4 Duke beat Fairfield 109-59 on Saturday night in its second game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Preseason All-American Jahlil Okafor and Quinn Cook each scored 17 for the Blue Devils (2-0).

Duke shot 64.5 percent — hitting better than 60 percent for the second straight game — used a 30-10 run that bridged the halves and kept pulling away for their second lopsided win in two nights.

Amile Jefferson finished with 15 points to help Duke score 100 points in consecutive games for the first time since the Kyrie Irving-led team did it in November 2010.

Marcus Gilbert had 15 points for Fairfield (1-1) before fouling out with 6:22 remaining.

The competition gets much tougher next time out: No. 18 Michigan State awaits Tuesday night in the Champions Classic in Indianapolis.

Playing a little over 24 hours after the third-most lopsided game in program history — a 113-44 rout of Presbyterian — the Blue Devils got a bit more of a test from these Stags.

This was an eight-point game with less than 3 minutes remaining before halftime, before Duke's decisive run came.

And not surprisingly, Okafor played a key role in getting it going.

He had a hand in each of the first three buckets of the burst, first dishing to Jefferson for the layup that pushed Duke's lead into double figures to stay at 38-28. The freshman followed that with layups about a minute apart to really get the run going, and Winslow hit an alley-oop layup from Cook with about 3 seconds before the break to make it 44-30.
