You may have heard of famous influencers like the Dutch adventurist Wim Hof (aka the “Ice Man”) or talk show host Joe Rogan and his “Ice Bath Tub Challenge”.

Or perhaps you’ve heard of Chris Hemsworth making headlines recently for an Instagram post where he had to strip for a cold plunge bath. Countless celebrities and athletes have made ice baths, ice barrels, and cold exposure tubs into a viral sensation.

We asked, “Is it real — or simply hype?”

After looking at what the experts have to say and taking an in-depth look at ice bath tub manufacturers, we found that cold immersion may be “the real deal” indeed.

No wonder it’s one of the 3 major pillars of the famous Wim Hof Method.

Good news is — you don’t have to be a serious athlete, obsessed with health, and longevity— or even a Wim Hof fanatic — to seriously benefit from an ice bath tub or high-quality cold exposure tub.

You just need an open mind and persistence.

In this article, we’re taking you on a cold immersion journey to learn what cold exposure is all about — plus, we’ll show you a detailed comparison of the best ice baths

Why I Turned to Cold Exposure

When I first heard of intentional cold exposure, I watched some Scandinavians do something called “winter swimming” on TV.

Needless to say, this made me shiver just watching it.

My own journey into cold exposure and “alternative” remedies wouldn’t really start until my mid 20′s when I learned I had inflammation and immune system dysfunctions.

As a newfound health fanatic then and a person who loved adventure, my discovery of Wim Hof, cold exposure, and ice baths offered me a new hope, as well as mental and physical benefits.

Ice Baths in Mainstream Media: A Hype or Renaissance?

(Wim Hof, Twitter) | Wim Hof, a Dutch extreme athlete and motivational speaker, has held records for swimming under ice, withstanding cold temperatures, and even running barefoot in snow.

Wim Hof, a Dutch extreme athlete and motivational speaker, has held records for swimming under ice, withstanding cold temperatures, and even running barefoot in snow.

Wim Hof’s life and The Wimhof Method have inspired millions to challenge themselves using his breathing techniques and cold water immersion (cold showers or ice baths).

According to Susie Parr, author of The Story of Swimming, Western society has debated ice baths and cold immersion for a long time.

Thomas Jefferson and Hippocrates, for example, vouched for the positive effects of ice baths on well-being and “good health.”

In addition, swimming in natural ice baths (commonly called “winter swimming”) has a very long tradition in Northern countries, such as Estonia, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, and others.

According to Knechtle and others in the National Library of Medicine, Northerners have long believed in the benefits of ice baths, as the practice developed along the sauna and Banya traditions.

(Wim Hof) | Joe Rogan recently promoted ice bath tubs and the benefits of ice baths on his show

Recently, podcast host Joe Rogan recently promoted ice bath tubs and the benefits of ice baths on his show (The Joe Rogan Experience).

Joe Rogan’s guest discussions, viral ice bath tub Challenge, and social media posts taken inside his Morozko Forge and Blue Cube ice tubs, have certainly added to the cold immersion hype.

Ice Bath Tub Benefits

  1. Immune System Boost

  2. Stress & Mental Health Improvements

  3. Weight / Fat Loss

  4. Inflammation & Pain Reduction

  5. Muscle & Pain Recovery (for certain conditions)

  6. Cardiovascular Health & Stamina

  7. Longevity

  8. More

Better Immunity

Research shows that ice baths may protect you from disease and infection.

According to this study on winter swimmers, ice water submersion/ice baths boost antioxidant protection, which in turn helps the body fight off illness.

Ice baths also boost your leukocytes (white blood cells that fight infections) and forces the lymphatic system (your lymph nodes throughout your body) to contract and push fluid through them.

In fact, if you suffer from chronic respiratory infections such as chronic pneumonia or bronchitis, cold water exposure may strengthen your body to defend itself better.

Many people took to cold water submersion during the COVID Pandemic, as respiratory infection was a chief concern among the global population and we needed more at-home wellness practices. This was especially popular in countries such as Poland, where a study confirmed that these cultural practices were helpful in improving overall health and decreasing inflammation in the body.

According to this study, one single cold immersion session alone won’t offer as many benefits for you. The research shows that humans need to practice cold water immersion about 3 times a week for 6 or more weeks before you can measure any change in immunity.

This goes back to what we said about consistency earlier: You have to practice this regularly if you’re going to improve your immunity with cold immersion.

Stress & Mental Health Improvement

Dr. Andrew Huberman, a tenured associate professor of neurobiology at Stanford University, says that stress is an evolutionary trait designed to help us survive.

In this video, he also goes on to explain how regular ice baths can help “raise the ceiling on your stress threshold.”

What’s the significance of ice baths “raising the ceiling of your stress threshold”?

  • Emotional stability

  • Calm under pressure

  • Improved relationships & job performance

  • Mental resilience

  • Increased life satisfaction

Raising the ceiling on your stress threshold allows you to become more calm in ‘lesser’ and more psychologically-stressful situations (think of careers, raising kids, finances, and other anxiety-inducers).

[Note: This does NOT replace medical advice and evaluation for generalized anxiety disorders.]

Still, studies show that ice baths, cold showers (to a lesser extent), and Wim Hof breathing exercises help you become more calm under ‘other’ pressures in life and, therefore, feel less stressed during the day in general.

Feeling calm in the midst of everyday pressures and average stress-sources can help regulate your moods, improve your relationships with others around you, help you meet deadlines and manage work more clearly, give you more mental resilience, and even increase your overall sense of life satisfaction.

This increase in your stress threshold ties into an improved immune system, where better management of high-stress situations will allow your body to more readily adapt and not respond to stress with illness.

Fat Loss

Are you skeptical about this one? Well, I was, too.

However, health experts and studies actually back this up.

Here’s how Dr. John Rusin puts it: When our bodies are exposed to cold temperatures during ice baths, we have two major responses.

First, this sudden “shock” to our system triggers a need to keep our body warm. We start to shiver, and our body starts releasing adrenaline.

This causes an increase in metabolism, and our body starts burning more calories to regulate its internal temperature and functions. In other words, this shock wakes up our body and gets it going.

Secondly, our bodies use up energy in the form of “brown adipose tissue,” as well as “white adipose tissue,” to keep us warm.

“Brown adipose tissue” regulates our body temperature, and cold immersion definitely ‘activates’ a response out of it when practiced.

Regular practice of cold immersion and ice baths signals to our bodies that it needs to consistently convert more white fat into “brown adipose tissue” to have it stored for when the body’s exposed to cold.

With this, our bodies become more efficient in converting white fat into brown fat, which is easier for the body to burn for fuel.

The Link Between Fat Loss & Stress:

Interestingly, researchers have found that stress management benefits from ice baths are also linked to fat loss benefits.

In order for your body to “burn” white fat, you need to undergo a process called “lipolysis.” This refers to your body converting the fatty acids into glycerol, mobilizing it, and oxygenating this energy source.

As The Map Institute explains, when we’re stressed out, this oxygenation doesn’t occur, and the fat that was mobilized turns around and converts right back into… [you guessed it] fat.

To have more efficient glycerol oxygenation, it helps to lower or better manage your general stress levels.

Here’s what this implies: Regular cold immersion can not only lower your general stress levels and boost your body’s metabolism, but it can make your body convert, mobilize, and oxygenate — therefore burn — your stored fat (instead of muscle) more efficiently during the day/night.

Consistent ice baths, along with exercise, proper nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle, can help you create a more lean body mass and physical physique.

You should still seek a doctor or dietician’s guidance upon trying fat-loss techniques.

Pain Management

Any time you “ice that injury” or use IcyHot, you’re practicing something called cryotherapy— even if on a small scale.

Cryotherapy relieves pain through exposing the inflamed or painful area to ice or very cold temperatures. This reduces pain and swelling because it lowers local inflammation.

Despite the generally unpleasant experience of large-scale cryotherapy (ice bath tubs and cold immersion), this cold exposure and your body’s internal response actually causes the blood vessels to constrict, the blood flow to slow down, and overall inflammation to lower over time.

In other words, the ice bath tub might be uncomfortable and even painful while you’re doing; however, in the long run, you’ll potentially have less inflammation and pain in your body.

Better Muscle Recovery

Ice bath tubs are a very common practice among athletes — especially professionals. According to Pat Chadwick, certified personal trainer from Gymless.org, cold water helps relieve soreness and speed up muscle recovery after intense workouts. Mr. Chadwick and his team wrote an extensive guide about ice tubs and cold plunge benefits here.

Many believe it does this because cold water causes the blood vessels to constrict, which in turn makes the flow of blood slow down.

Science still debates about cold water’s direct connection with muscle recovery; however, professional and serious athletes have practiced this in mainstream sports for decades now and swear by this.

Canadian mixed martial artist George St. Pierre promotes the Ice Barrel, as you see above and frequently in his social media feed.

Cardiovascular Health, Stamina, & Endurance

Cold immersion and plunges certainly “shock” your system. As soon as you dip in, your stress levels and adrenaline rise. In response, your heart begins to speed up.

This results in high cardio exertion on the body (especially when used in conjunction with a sauna).

Regular ice baths can build up cardiovascular stamina and strength in a similar way that exercise does.

However, it’s important to ask your doctor about ice baths before you start. If you have heart problems or are at risk for heart disease, ice baths could actually be dangerous to you (see more here).

Longevity

Scientists are still debating and monitoring this, but many believe that cold immersion helps us live longer.

It’s possible since ice baths have been shown to reduce inflammation, reduce stress, improve immunity, and increase cardiovascular health, as elaborated in this study.

Therefore, those benefits in themselves seem like they’d keep you alive and well longer.

However, scientists have proposed more recent ideas about possibly more “hidden” connections between cold immersion and longevity.

Other Possible Benefits

Here are other possible benefits of taking ice baths:

  • PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) relief

  • Mental resilience

  • Increased focus

Deciding on How to Plunge? Consider These Factors

What Type of Tub Do You Need? (An Ice Bath Tub / Ice Barrel Vs. Electrical Cold Plunge)

You can choose from many different types of ice bath tubs and cold plunges. While all of them allow you to practice cold immersion in some fashion, some are more convenient and even more psychologically immersive than others.

Plain Insulated Containers for Ice Bath Tubs (AKA an Ice Barrel)

They are what they sound like — plain containers that you manually add ice into and jump inside.

✅ PROS:

  • Far more affordable than electrical cold exposure tubs

  • Lighter & more portable

  • No electricity required

  • Many like the squatting position of these

  • Insulated

  • More durable compared to multipurpose containers & kid pools

❌ CONS:

  • Must manually make or buy ice every time beforehand

  • Manual refilling, cleaning, pouring ice into

  • Setup can take more than 30 minutes

  • Purchasing frozen ice may not be convenient every 1-3 days

Electrical Ice Baths / Cold Exposure Tubs

These create the sensation of icy water flowing down a stream without the actual stream (and in many cases without actual ice).

✅ PROS:

  • No wait time (always running and ready to use)

  • Replicates stream flow inside

  • Self-sanitizing

  • Often with breath decks for easier accessibility & comfort

  • Sometimes with hot-tub capabilities

  • Ideal for convenient, frequent use

  • Long-lasting with warranty protection

❌ CONS:

  • Electricity required

  • Expensive (some up to $20k)

  • Not portable (some weighing 300lbs)

Portable Ice Bath Pools

A portable ice bath is great if you’re on the go or moving around often. You’ll also save money on it.

✅ PROS:

  • Cheapest option

  • Extremely portable

  • Sizes vary more (some with more than 1 person capacity for an ice bath pool)

  • Like a DIY ice bath tub, but designed to make setup much easier

❌ CONS:

  • Manual set-up (ice, water, temp regulation) required

  • Cost of ice can add up (or else you must buy an ice maker)

  • Not as durable / lower quality

  • Often less insulated

Portability & Set-Up Requirements

Do you plan to bring your tub along with you? You may not want one that’s 300lbs.

Instead, something like the Ice Barrel or an affordable, plain tub might be what you need (or what you need as extra alongside your larger cold immersion tub).

Ease of Use & Power Requirements

Don’t have a ton of time on your hands? Go for the electrical cold exposure tub that consistently runs and stays cool.

Or, don’t have access to power / don’t want to rely on electricity? Go for the tubs that you manually fill with a water hose and ice.

Sanitation, Draining, & Filtration Capabilities

This ties back to convenience. Cleaning is another factor that’s important for your overall safety and health.

If you don’t feel you have time to clean your ice bath tub (or if you’ll have multiple people using it), you’ll want one that’s self-cleaning. The Cold Plunge, Blue Cube, Renu Therapy, & Morozko Forge offer self-cleaning for ultimate hygiene and convenience.

Size, Dimensions, & Capacity

Consider the physical space you have available for your cold plunge, as well as your own size.

Residential ice baths, especially the electrical ice baths, range in size, capacity, and dimension. Make sure to measure your space and take note of each product’s dimensions and capacity.

For instance, if you have a small garage you plan to put an ice bath tub inside, you might want the Blue Cube Mini Me.

On the other hand, if you’re a tall, broad person, you’ll likely need something like The Cold Plunge’s Plunge Pro XL edition.

Best ice bath tubs & Tubs for Cold Water Immersion (& Extreme ‘Wim Hofing’) at Home

Here’s the very best of the best ice baths and cold exposure tubs:

#1 Best Overall, Best Affordable & Portable Ice Bath Tub, Best for Portability: Ice Barrel

(The Ice Barrel) | The Ice Barrel is the most affordable and overall best ice tub.

Ice Barrel Price: $1,199.97

»2023 Promo Code ($125 discount!): IRONMONK

This ice bath tub embraces two things— simplicity and you.

Some users describe the sensation like being in a ‘cold womb,’ although that seems paradoxical. Either way, Ice Barrel offers a unique sensation for a fraction of the cost and space compared to others.

✅ PROS:

  • Less than $2k, making it the most affordable tub in the market

  • Little space required

  • Visually-pleasing design

  • High Quality Materials

  • No electricity required

  • Lightweight (55lbs) and portable

  • Insulates up to 3 days

❌ CONS:

  • Must manually fill with ice

  • No self-sanitizing system

  • Could feel claustrophobic to some

  • Shipping starts at $95

No electricity source? No problem. The Ice Barrel just needs three things: Ice, water, and YOU.

Athletes, including George St. Pierre, rave about this model— simply called the Ice Barrel.

Among these top choices, it’s by far the most affordable and size-conscious. The only major downsides are that you have to manually cool it down (it’s no luxury ice tub).

That means you’re going to need to either purchase bags of ice on your own each time you want to use this barrel, or you’ll need a method to produce large amounts of ice at home.

As far as sanitization, the company does sell helpful products that allow you to extend the life of the water (so that you don’t have to drain so often and clean). The model is also a durable ice tub (superior in terms of materials and insulation to, say, an empty trash barrel).

If you don’t mind picking up a couple bags of ice on your way home from work, for example, then this model can deliver the benefits of cold immersion (and even help you practice the Wim Hof Method) without a luxury price.

#2 The Best Cold Exposure Tub: The Cold Plunge (As Seen on Shark Tank)

(The Cold Plunge) | The best cold exposure experience is with the The Cold Plunge Tub.

The Cold Plunge Price: from $4,990.00

✅ PROS:

  • 39-103F temperature range

  • Can also be a hot tub

  • Spacious & relaxing

  • No ice or cooling necessary (24/7 running)

  • Free shipping, delivery, 1-year warranty, 30-day return policy

  • For indoor & outdoor use

  • Self-sanitization(micron & ozone)

  • Constant flow (for stream-like sensation)

  • Insulative, waterproof cover included

  • Relatively affordable for self-contained cold exposure tubs

❌ CONS:

  • Less tub space compared to competitors

  • Less aesthetic / not very eye-pleasing

  • Requires electricity

  • No breath deck

This self-contained cold immersion tub was, too, once a viral sensation thanks to Shark Tank.

The Cold Plunge (or sometimes called the Shark Tank Cold Plunge Pool, for its appearance in the series) definitely lacks the aesthetics of BlueCube’s ice baths and others; however, the ten-thousand-dollar price difference makes it magically forgivable.

Their cold plunge tubs contain many of the major benefits of the luxury models (such as sanitization, ongoing cooling, and a top cover); however, it offers loads of space for you to truly lie back and relax.

In addition, the cold plunge can double as a warm bath. You can actually warm up the water inside for relaxation.

#3 Best Commercial Tub: BlueCube Mini Me

(Blue Cube Baths) | Blue Cube Baths is the best commercial tub for ice baths.

BlueCube Mini Me Price: $15,999.99

This iceless tub consistently has the best ratings and reviews for its price.

While it’s not cheap, it’s also not a total fortune either; it offers the greatest benefits and style among cold exposure tubs that gives it the highest ROI (return of investment) of any out there.

✅ PROS:

  • Superior, sleek design

  • High-quality parts

  • 36-60F temperature range

  • No ice or cooling necessary (24/7 running)

  • Supports up to 15 plunges back-to-back

  • Minimum electricity needed (as much as small refrigerator)

  • Constant flow of water (mimics natural stream)

  • Breath deck

  • Free shipping, delivery, 5-year warranty, 30-day return policy, + support

  • For indoor & outdoor use

  • Chemical-free filtration (micron & ozone)

  • Insulative cover included

❌ CONS:

  • Less tub space compared to competitors

  • Requires electricity

  • Not hot-tub enabled

This tub has a superior quality and design that adds to your room or outdoor space’s look instead of taking from it.

(Blue Cube Tubs) | This tub has a superior quality and design that adds to your room or outdoor space’s look instead of taking from it.

It’s crafted out of real hickory, padauk, and wenge, with a stainless steel tub inside.

My favorite thing (other than the style)? It supports back-to-back plunges, in the event you have friends or teammates that want to also take a dip.

When you order, you won’t worry about shipping or delivery costs, and you can rest assured Blue Cube will protect your purchase with a 5-year warranty and support.

The major downside is its size. It’s not called the Mini Me for nothing.

This model by Blue Cube won’t support larger people over 5′11″ and 275+ lbs as comfortably; however, this smaller edition offers the same cold exposure benefits with a relatively ‘mini’ price.

Overall, this tub was the winner.

#4 Best Luxury Cold Plunge & Ice Bath Tub: Morozko Forge (Used by Joe Rogan)

(Morozko Forge) | Morozko Forge has the best luxury cold plunge ice tub.

Morozko Forge Price: from $7,700.00

As seen on Joe Rogan’s social media, the Morozko Forge is the world’s only cold plunge to create its own ice and put you in literally FREEZING temperature waters.

✅ PROS:

  • Aesthetic design

  • High-quality parts

  • Spacious (4 & 6 foot designs available)

  • Drops down to 32F (freezing)

  • Creates its own ice (for ice cold water)

  • No adding ice or cooling necessary (24/7 running)

  • Constant flow of water (mimics natural stream)

  • Breath deck

  • 3-Year warranty + 30-day return policy

  • For indoor & outdoor use

  • Self-filtration & sanitization (micron & ozone)

  • Insulative cover included

❌ CONS:

  • Less tub space compared to competitors

  • Requires electricity

  • Not hot-tub enabled

Want the convenience of 24/7 cooling AND the ice? This stylish tub drops all the way down to freezing temperature (32 F / 0° Celsius) and it creates its own ice.

In fact, this premium ice bath tub is the only in the world that does this currently. You’ll also enjoy the invigorating flow of cold water, replicating a natural winter stream sensation.

This tub has a decent price (just under $10k), and adds beauty to the room, with its varnished cedar frame and marine-grade plywood breath deck.

As a luxury ice tub, it offers self-sanitizing and lots of space. Joe Rogan, known for his broad shoulders and large, muscular build, has also dipped into this tub as part of his ice bath tub Challenge (watch here).

If you want a truly one-of-a-kind tub with truly freezing temperatures, the Morozko is the way to go.

#5 Best for Design: Renu Therapy’s Cold Stoic

(Renu Therapy) | Renu Therapy has the best designed ice tub.

Renu Therapy Price: from $9,699.00

If you want premium quality, safety, and performance, the Cold Stoic by Renu Therapy is your cold plunge.

✅ PROS:

  • Beautiful design

  • North American-made

  • Spacious cold tub & extra depth

  • Electrical safety prioritized

  • Drops down to 39F

  • No adding ice or cooling necessary (24/7 running)

  • Constant flow of water (mimics natural stream)

  • Breath deck

  • 5-Year warranty + 45-day return policy

  • For indoor & outdoor use

  • Self-filtration & sanitization (micron & ozone)

  • Insulative cover included

❌ CONS:

  • Less tub space compared to competitors

  • Requires electricity

  • Not hot-tub enabled

Renu Therapy comes from an exclusive line of luxury spa products, including saunas.

The smaller, base model, the Cold Stoic, gives you the best benefits of cold water immersion and Renu Therapy’s superior quality for a nearly $4k difference (from the larger size).

One thing that makes this tub stand out is that it’s not made from as many imported parts; instead, the creator decided to use at least 80% of North American materials (many handmade) instead of importing from China.

That way, the company can better oversee the production and quality, as well as make sure most of the costs are going right back into our country to help fuel our economy.

These tubs are highly aesthetic and add to the room instead of taking from it, with different woods to choose from such as cedar, redwood, dark burn, and tiger strip. They finish the outside with either organic beeswax or a Japanese waterproofing technique called “Shou Sugi Ban.”

In addition, this durable ice tub guarantees long-term use and more safety than its competitors. All the electrical components are covered up for maximum protection against being electrocuted.

Plus, RenuTherapy’s warranty covers this durable ice bath for up to 5 years.
