Utah Christians united to mark the start of Western Christianity’s holiest weekend of the year with a Good Friday procession through the heart of Salt Lake City.

The annual interfaith Procession of the Cross — a pre-Easter staple for nearly four decades — started at the Cathedral of the Madeleine on South Temple followed by stops at nearby First Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church, St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral and the Crossroads Food Pantry.

The march is meant to symbolically retrace Jesus’ steps to Golgotha, with participants taking turns bearing the cross in a buildup to Easter Sunday.
