What the new LDS temple recommend questions say

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) The sun rises on the temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019.

For Latter-day Saints, having a recommend — a card attesting to the holder’s adherence to church principles and practices — allows a person to enter a temple, which believers consider to be "the House of the Lord."

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints go to the temple to participate in religious ceremonies, including eternal marriages, and to receive instructions on the purpose of life.

Standard questions have been used since about 1922 but have been revised through the years to reflect contemporary concerns and issues.

That happened again in the closing speech of the faith’s 189th Semiannual General Conference on Sunday, when President Russell M. Nelson read the new wording for the 15 recommend questions, which he said have “recently been edited for clarity.”

The changes are subtle but express some clear distinctions of the Nelson era, which began about 20 months ago.

The interview questions for temple recommends are below. Verbiage in 11 questions has have been modified. The questions are listed below, noting whether they are unchanged or what they said previously.
