A sweep will not be in the cards for the Salt Lake Bees. After taking the first two games of their four-game series against the Las Vegas 51s, the Bees fell 5-3 in the third game in front of an announced 3,680 at Smith's Ballpark on Wednesday night. Bees starting pitcher Troy Scribner (6-2) allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks in seven innings.
The Bees (33-27) were held to one extra-base hit. Nolan Fontana and Ramon Flores had two hits apiece in the loss, while Rey Navarro, Dustin Ackley and Sherman Johnson drove in runs. Navarro and Johnson both came through with two-out RBIs for the Bees.
Turning Point • Las Vegas scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run homer by shortstop Amed Rosario. Rosario, who Baseball America ranked fifth on its latest list of the top 100 prospects in the minors, turned on a pitch nearly shoulder height and hit it over the left-field wall.
Bees MVP • Fontana went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.
Hidden Hero • Relief pitcher Mike Morin pitched 12⁄3 scoreless innings of relief to keep the game within reach for the Bees. He issued two walks, but he did not allow a hit.
Quoteworthy • "The front office, they're doing everything they can to try to get as much talent to the organization, in case it needs to be called up, as they can," Bees manager Keith Johnson said of the myriad of new faces joining his club in the past week. "In the process, there's going to be some turnover in the roster. As you can see, there's a ton of guys getting opportunities at the big league level."
Angel Angle • Bees opening day starter Alex Meyer (2-3) struck out nine and allowed one unearned run for the Angels on Wednesday in a loss to the Detroit Tigers.
