Letter: It’s a slippery slope from medical marijuana to recreational use

Cory Gardner of Colorado announced Friday, April 13, 2018 that President Trump has pledged to support legislation protecting the marijuana industry in states that have legalized the drug. Gardner has been pushing to reverse a decision made by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in January that removed prohibitions that kept federal prosecutors from pursuing cases against people who were following state pot laws. It looks like the camel has his nose under the tent. It looks like we are about ready head down the slippery slope. Medical marijuana may be coming soon to Utah. For years we have been discouraging tobacco smoking. Now, advocates are proposing that people with various maladies start to smoke marijuana.

The main active ingredient in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol, often known as THC. A pharmaceutical by the name of Marinol, in tablet form, contains THC. It is available now with a doctor’s prescription. I am wondering if Marinol wouldn’t replace the need for smoking medical marijuana. We know what smoking anything will do to your lungs. You know how it will come down. Medical marijuana first, because of desperate need.

Once that door is open, the recreational marijuana will be in our midst.
