One man is dead and another remained in critical condition Thursday after the truck they were in ran a stop sign and smashed into a Garden City sporting goods store, knocking it off its foundation, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred at 6:37 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. 89 and State Route 30 in Garden City, which is on the western shore of Bear Lake. Video of the incident shows the truck running the stop sign and rolling onto its side as it attempted to turn right on SR 30, then slamming into the Pugstones Sporting store at Raspberry Square, according to the UHP.
“Prior to the crash, witnesses indicated that the semi was driving erratic[ly] at a high rate of speed,” UHP reported on its website.
The driver and his passenger were transported to Logan Regional Hospital by ambulance, then airlifted to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. UHP has not released their names.
The sporting goods store was not occupied at the time and no one else was injured. According to UHP, the building was “compromised to the point of structural instability,” and engineers have been called in to shore it up before the truck can be safely removed.
