Letter: Who knew Republicans cared so much about women’s equality?

(Kenny Holston | The New York Times) Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, speaks during a news conference regarding the SAVE Act, a voter ID bill, at the Capitol in Washington, on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

Here we are once again with Donald Trump and our own senator, Mike Lee, continuing to push voting restriction legislation. The SAVE America Act would disenfranchise married women across the country who took their spouse’s name, requiring additional time and expense to obtain the required documents merely to vote. Very few men will face these hurdles.

It is surprising to see Trump, Lee and many Republicans encouraging women to become more independent, to keep their name when marrying, or not marry at all. Yet, this is exactly what they are doing with the act. The message to women — young and old alike — is: In order to exercise your hard-earned right to vote, keep your given name or, better yet, stay independently single.

Who knew Republicans cared so much about women’s equality?

It is quite surprising because they certainly don’t care enough to include us in the United States Constitution.
