Letter: Unlike Rep. Pierucci and her armed constituent, I’ve been braving the mean streets of Salt Lake City without fear for decades

(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) Rep. Candice Pierucci, R-Riverton, speaks during a press conference at the Utah Capitol on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2026.

So, Rep. Candice Pierucci, R-Herriman, wants a law whereby the taxpayers would finance some gun lockers near the Delta Center. This is because one of her constituents wants to have their gun from their car to the center. The closest parking garage is about 100 yards from the Delta Center entrance. What could possibly happen in that distance for one to need the security of a gun, clutching it like Linus with his blanket. Do they believe the streets of downtown are full of marauding gangs and homeless hordes?

I worked downtown for 40 years and have walked its streets many times. I never felt the need to have a gun for security. I must be the bravest man in Utah. Perhaps that constituent could continue to use their car as their gun locker and keep a ball point pen ready for the dangers of the mean streets of downtown. Then Rep. Pierucci could busy herself with the equally important legislation of legalizing ball point pens as concealed weapons.
