Letter: It seems Gov. Cox has morphed into Phil Lyman

(Isaac Hale | Pool) Gov. Spencer Cox, left, shakes hands with Rep. Phil Lyman after a gubernatorial GOP primary debate held at the Eccles Broadcast Center in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

Gov. Cox:

I supported you in your most recent election because the alternative, Phil Lyman, was unacceptable to me. I supported you at the state convention and then voted for you in the primary only to have you turn around and become Lyman right before my eyes. I wonder if you can imagine how disappointed both moderate Republicans and moderate Democrats are in you.

What possible reason can you give for expanding the state Supreme Court from five members to seven except to stack the court in favor of far-right Republicans? Sen. Mike Lee recently gave a spirited statement about why stacking courts is a bad idea. It’s going to cost us $3 million just this year with another million and a half each year going forward. And this at a time when we’re doling out more tax cuts.

And, yippie! Moderates of both parties get to pay for an expansion they don’t support and which will limit their voice in government.

I’ve learned my lesson. I won’t be foolish enough to support you next time around.

David Harris, Salt Lake City
