Letter: Maloy and Owens should drop the frivolous lawsuit regarding Utah’s redistricting map

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Rep. Burgess Owens and Utah Rep. Celeste Maloy at the Utah Republican Nominating Convention in Salt Lake City on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Dear Rep. Maloy and Rep. Owens,

Please cease and desist from your frivolous lawsuit using taxpayer money against Utah’s voter-approved and court-upheld map.

Contrary to your suit, as reported on KUER, Judge Gibson did not draw any electoral map. That work was done in due diligence and transparency by Utah’s Independent Redistricting Commission, and should have been in place since 2020.

Judge Gibson simply chose an appropriate existing map when the Legislature flouted the law anew with another newly gerrymandered map. The fact that this may disrupt your and Rep. Owens’s tenure in Congress is simply not Salt Lake County voters’ problem.

You are of course welcome to seek reelection in primary and general elections like any other citizen of the district.

Loren Carle, Salt Lake City
