Thinking back to more normal times, I always believed that our immigration system was weak, disorganized and ineffective. I heard time and again that it would be too costly to revamp and put into law a new fair, moral and beneficial system, beneficial not only to immigrants but beneficial to our country.
This system would lawfully remove criminals who came into our country illegally. The system would allow review of all others who are undocumented and individually determine a path for them. In many cases, those undocumented people have been here for years, have worked, have families, have paid taxes, have been part of their community. A path to citizenship under such circumstances should be clear.
Today, all of these people live in fear. Standing by them will often put you in harm’s way, as we’ve seen.
The cost of drawing up such a plan, voting it into law and implementing it would be very high.
I doubt the cost for this would be more than what this administration has allocated for ICE and border patrol and those who manage and run this abhorrent system.
